Does this "feature" have a name?

My good friend, a carpenter, made and fitted this stunning door to his house. By means of an oversight he mounted the doorways too deep in to the archway which meant the doorways wouldn't open, so he lower the 2 ear trying grooves within the masonry.

He's a bit embarrassed about what he sees as a mistake, however I personally see it as a really aesthetic mistake.

Has this design occurred in architural historical past? Does it have a reputation?
