A 19th-Century Upstate New York Farmhouse Gets a Makeover—’90s Italian Villa Style

For one bicoastal household, an 1870s farmhouse in Germantown, New York, appeared like the perfect place to spend their summers. The small, bucolic city, with its inventive neighborhood and beautiful views of the Hudson River, would provide a quiet reprieve from buzzing Los Angeles. The one factor standing between them and a blissful July within the countryside was a full renovation of the historic dwelling.

The household reenlisted Tandem Design, the studio that had overhauled their major residence and two of their workplace areas, to replace the dwelling’s conventional interiors—however they didn’t present a particular temporary. “Our consumer stated, ‘Simply shock me,’” remembers founder Jessica Hansen, who assigned the undertaking to her East Coast–primarily based designer Shelley Younger. “We constructed up sufficient belief, having labored with them a lot, so I let Shelley go for it.”
