The Australian Institute of Architects will current its ninth exhibition on the 18th Venice Structure Biennale, from 20 Might to 26 November.
Titled “Unsettling Queenstown,” the exhibition can be a “multifaceted and multi-sensory set up,” exploring the themes of decolonization and decarbonization by the development of a “Queenstown”.
“There are Queenstowns all around the former British Empire,” the Institute stated, referencing Australia, New Zealand, Asia, Africa, and the Americas. “It’s a place each native and international.” Led by inventive administrators Anthony Coupe, Julian Worrall, Emily Peach, Ali Gumillya Baker, and Sarah Rhodes, the exhibition design is impressed by the pervasiveness of the British imperial hangover, with the ubiquity of Queenstowns as “an emblem for decolonial wrestle all around the world.”
“Weaving between actual and fictional Queenstowns, the exhibition will discover and query the relations between individuals and the setting underneath the logics of colonialism and useful resource extraction, by the lens of a spot during which these are introduced into sharp focus,” an Institute spokesperson stated.
“Unsettling Queenstown” responds to the theme for the 18th Biennale, “The Laboratory of the Future”, chosen by curator Lesley Lokko. The architectural response options depictions of a colonial copper-mining city on Tasmania in addition to Queenstown in Port Adelaide, depicted and reimagined by video and voice. A ghostly fragment of colonial structure – a scale mannequin of the city’s Empire Resort – is suspended above the set up, accompanied by immersive sound and pictures.
The exhibition will discover the overwriting of Aboriginal Nation, whereby British names and symbols had been stamped over Indigenous lands. The pavilion serves to offer an act of “demapping,” revealing hidden tales of pre-colonial Nation.
“‘Unsettling Queenstown’ unites decolonial idea and praxis, weaving parts from actual locations and gleanings from present architectural intelligence ins earch of elements to contribute to Venice’s Laboratory of the Future,” the inventive administrators stated.
The exhibition is to be put in within the Denton Corker Marshall-designed Pavilion of Australia within the Giardini. A ribbon chopping ceremony for “Unsettling Queenstown” will happen on 18 Might.
