One in all our all-time favourite posts from the Remodelista archive? A Greek Architect’s Ode to Minimalism, architect Theodore Zoumboulakis’s personal kitchen in his household’s retreat on the isle of Hydra. So we weren’t too shocked that one other venture we’ve been admiring not too long ago is by the identical hand: Zoumboulakis himself.
Nikolaou Residence, on the Greek island of Aegina—only one hour from Athens—was previously the house and studio of the painter Nikos Nikolaou. In line with the Residence: “Nikolaou and his spouse Angela settled in Aegina in 1964, and their house turned a daily hang-out for artwork lovers and intellectuals. Renovation work started in 2019, with the refurbishment of the home and grounds and the creation of 5 guesthouses,” overseen by Zoumboulakis Architects. “Ranging from the entrance room—initially the painter’s first studio and later his sitting room—and based mostly on the photographic data and the household’s recollections, the thought was to revive the assorted objects and artworks of their authentic place and thus reconstruct the environment through which Nikolaou lived.”
Now, the Residence and its visitor homes can be found for stays among the many olive groves. “Guesthouse residents can benefit from the sundown sitting on the stone benches the place the Aegina ‘gang’ used to satisfy each afternoon,” together with Nikolaou and the Greek artists and poets Yannis Moralis, Christos Kapralos, and Odysseas Elytis, based on the Residence. Additionally obtainable? Visits to Nikolaou’s preserved Atelier—and to the Temple of Aphaea close by.
